Start: Sydney, Sunday July 7th
Finish: Sydney, Sunday July 21st
This was the second Ampol Trial, and like the previous one, was not auspiced by CAMS. A last minute attempt to gain a CAMS permit failed with a controversial vote at a National Council Meeting. The event was organised by the Australian Sporting Car Club and authorised by a Committee of the Combined Council of Motor Clubs which included Al Wark, Evan Green and Dave Bartlett .
The event was not a true round Australia trial as it did not visit WA or NT (nor Tasmania) but covered a 9,656 km course which include the (then) infamous Birdsville Track, the Hann Highway to Atherton and the car breaking Sarina-Marlborough Road.
The event attracted a field of 79 starters, almost the same as the “rival” Mobilgas Rally that was run just a month later. Volkswagens were well represented and filled the top two places, with Jack Witter and Doug Stewart victors.
