1966 Alpine Rally

The 1966 Alpine Rally, organised by the Light Car Club, was held on December 10.

1966 Alpine Rally to Holden

The 1966 Alpine attracted a classy field with factory teams from Ford, Holden and BMC.  With sponsorship from Phillip Morris, the event attracted a good deal of publicity including good coverage on Melbourne radio and television.

The event was fast, long and tough but the times allowed were generally achievable and many of the leading crews lost few points. The final scores had very small differences between the top six places. The event was won by the recently crowned state champions, Tony Roberts and Peter Haas, in the factory Holden X2, followed by the factory Ford Cortina of Frank Kilfoyle and Doug Rutherford.

Route

From the detailed results, much of the route can be ascertained.

From the Melbourne start crews headed up through Murrindindi (Limestone) and on through Bonnie Doon to Bridge Creek outside of Mansfield. Then through Whitfield and Dangdongadale to Myrtleford for a break.

Thence through Mt Beauty and Falls Creek to Omeo, then south, possibly down Angora Range Road then through Bruthen and Bairnsdale . From Bairnsdale to Stratford lists checkpoints at Flaggy Creek and Iguana Creek before heading to Stratford and on the a break at Moe.

The route of the final division appears to have headed up through to Tanjil Bren, across Link Road, up to Kel Junction then Cumberland Junction, back down to McMahons Creek and then down Muddy Creek and Big River Roads to the finish at Nayook West.
