The Yulunga Trial was held on April 10.
VCS Round 3 – 1976 HDCC Yulunga Trial
Directed by Lloyd Minifie for the Hamilton and District Car Club, the Yulunga Trial was a welcome addition to the 1977 Clubman Series. Based in Hamilton, the event attracted 27 entries.
From the start, crews transported south west to the Myamyn Forest where a very fast route charted section took points from all crews except Tom Seymour who cleaned in his Peugeot P76 (or is it Leyland 504 ?).
A navigational loop followed, with a blend of map reading and route charts around Lyons, with most crews arriving on time.
Heading off into the hilly country north-east of Dartmoor, seven crews were still clean. On the way to the half way break at Winnap, a fast route chart through a sandy forest cost all crews some points.
At half distance Phillips / Runnalls were just leading from brothers Chris and Simon Brown, closely followed by a bunch of crews.
The second division started easily with runs around Wright Swamp, which most clean-sheetet. But the following sections would prove costly for many crews due to unmapped roads, and hard–to-find overgrown tracks leading to vias from the right direction.
Then followed the demise of the leaders, when the Datsun 1600 of Bob Phillips and Ross Runnalls hit a kangaroo heavily, causing their retirement.
Colin Sichlau / David McKenzie had cleaned the second Division, but their fast finishing effort didn’t quite overtake the ultimate winners, Peter Corkran and Jim Maude in their Corolla, moving them into second in the series pointscore.
