The Camcrusher was held on 31 March. Jeff Beaumont tells the story:
Victorian Clubman Series Round 2 – ‘ 79 FFCC Camcrusher
RANDALL/SCOTT WIN “CRUSHER”
Chris Randall / Ray Scott got their VCS challenge off to a good start with a fine win in the Ford Four Car Club’s round of the state Clubman series. They put up fastest time on the first competitive, and held on to the lead to the finish. John Adams / Alec McCosh in their Lancer finished in second place followed by Bruce Keys and Dick Denvil in the Datsun 1600.
The Rally started at Bonnie Doon and headed through Anscona to the first competitive, which was won by Greg Lee / Allen Roberts. However they ran off on a tricky corner shortly after and retired.
Laurie Mitchell / Ian Sichlau in their 240Z powered Cortina slid into a gutter and got bogged in a ditch for about 5 minutes but recovered well to finally finish in sixth place.
An unusual entry was that of Adams / Fruscalzo in a rotary powered VW. They spent plenty of time in service but it will be interesting to see this machine in action once it is sorted.
The rally continued in the Strathbogie / Warrenbayne area, then through Reef Hills and on to the half way break at Benalla, where Randall was leading from Dennis Billings / Mick Ellis.
Due to constant rain, the first section in the second division had to be cancelled, so the crews set off in another run through Warrenbayne, then to service at Lake Nillahcootie. At this point Dayman / Frankish retired their Holden Ute with a broken axle .
Back into the plantations for the run home saw Randall continued his leading pace at the front. Section 14 saw the return run through “Greg Lee’s corner” which claimed Chris Wall, and then Max Hart.
The final 22 kilometre run over the Strathbogies saw Bruce Keys put up fastest time in his Datsun 510 / 1600, from Melbourne and Cullis, and Mitchell / Sichlau in the Z powered Cortina.
