It was a closely fought VRC that was reduced to only five rounds after three rounds were cancelled due to extreme weather, both hot (bushfire risk) and wet (road damage).

After four rounds, David Adams and Chris Randell lead with 20 points but they would have to drop one round so were effectively on 16 points, behind Portman with 18 points from two wins. David Officer and Kate Hobson were in third with only 15 points. Graeme Wise and John Williams were on 12 points and still mathematically in with a chance.

But in a remarkable final round, Dinta and Kate took the victory and the championship while both Portman and Adams failed to finish with mechanical problems. Wise/Williams finished seventh, out of the points.

Not surprisingly, David Adams and Chris Randell took out the Grade 2 Award while Chris Neilsen and David Ridley won the Clubman Award.

Series Regulations

These were specified in Section 3 of the 1983 Victorian Addendum to the Australian Rally Code.

The VRC was made up exclusively of Special Stage events.

Awards were made for outright champions, Grade 2 (non Grade 1, so Grade 3 and 4 could score points also) and Clubman (Grades 3 and 4 only).

In each division points were allocated 9-6-4-3-2-1 for first to sixth with the best four results to count from the five rounds.

Events

There were only five VRC events this year. The Begonia was originally calendared as the first round was cancelled due to the extreme fire risk. The Zodiac was postponed from early April to June, perhaps for similar reasons. The Rich River Rally was calendared as Round 5 but was cancelled due to the Murray River flooding. The calendared sixth round was the Blue Ribbon, also cancelled probably due to wet weather. The Akademos was originally calendared as Round 6 in August but was postponed to December, also due to extreme weather. Click on each event to see further details, including results.
