Highlights

The Victorian Rally Championship was won by Greg Hoinville and Michael Cains in their Ford Escort MkII. This was a symbolic generational change as Greg is the son of two-times former Victorian Trials Champion navigator Graham Hoinville. This was also the first year when Group G cars were no longer able to run in the VRC, only Production Rally Cars and Clubman Rally Cars.

Australian Rally Championship

Victoria’s hosted Round 2 of the Australian Rally Championship, the BP Visco 2000 Alpine, earlier in the year on 28-30 April. The Alpine was won by Greg Carr and Mick Harker in their Lancia Delta Integrale 4WD and they went on to convincingly win the championship.

Victorians didn’t feature in the championship placings this year.

Series

Victorian Rally Championship

VRC events were the Bayswater Wrecker Stages, the Swinburne 200 Rally, the BP Visco 2000 Alpine Rally, the Akademos Rally, the George Derrick Memorial Rally, and the Wodonga North Eastern Rally.

Outright Champions: Greg Hoinville / Michael Cains, Escort Mk II

State Recognised Award: Pat Barber / Jim Maude, Ford Laser TX3 4WD

Clubman Award: Neil Cuthbert/ Daryl Adams, Datsun 1600

Novice Award: Brenden Edgerton / Graeme Holding, Mitsubishi Lancer

Victorian Trials Championship (Series)

Again, the VTC was generally now called the VTS and comprised:

  4. William Harvey Memorial Trial

Western Region Trial Series

This series of closed events was for clubs in western Victoria, in particular Geelong, Ballarat and Melton. Events held were: 

  1. ANZ Begonia City Sprint Rally and Trial
  2. Yulunga Trial
  3. Daryl Tunbridge Memorial Trial
  4. Bernarras Trial
  5. William Harvey Memorial Trial

Riverina & North Eastern Series

This closed series was for members of the car clubs in northern and north-eastern Victoria. The series comprised at least these events, but perhaps additional NSW events:

  1. Beaurepaires for Tyres Trial
  2. Goulburner Trial
  3. Spring Trial

TAUCC Series

This series of closed events were for the various technical college and university car clubs, HMAS Cerberus Car Club, Melton Motor Sports Club and Nissan Car Club. This year the series comprised only four events. The Nissan Nightmoves was cancelled due to wet weather, as was the Bog-a-Duck Trial, while the Western Districts Trial was cancelled due to a lack of personnel to run the event.
