1949 Experts Trial

This, the third annual Experts Trial, organised by the Light Car Club, was held on July 23rd. The event as again directed by Jim Akhusrt with assistance from Roy Linden.

There were 22 starters of which 12 finished, bearing in mind that to be classified as a finisher it was necessary to complete the entire course. The first half of the event was in daylight, the second at night after a short stop in Doreen (now a northern suburb of Melbourne). A subsequent section forded the flooded Deep Creek (perhaps at Darraweit Guim) which saw Peter Manton’s P-Type MG swept away leading to his retirement.

The event was won by Bill Patterson in a Ford V8, and although reports mention “his crew”, they are not named!

A full report appeared in Australian Motor Sports.

As the report attests, there were many difficult sections with mud and deep water crossings.
