1954 Sun Rally

The second Sun Rally was conducted from Wednesday May 12 to Sunday May 16.

Directed by Maurie Monk, Donald Thomson and Colin Harvey, this 2,200 mile 5 day event covered almost every corner of Victoria. Harry Firth and Graham Hoinville ran out clear winners in a Sunbeam Alpine.

Route

The event was divided into 5 stages with a rest break between each. There was 45 individual sections/controls. The stages were as follows:

  1. From the start at Albert Park to Geelong via Murrundindi, Rochford, Malmsbury, Clunes, Ballarat and Rokewood.
  2. From Geelong to Horsham via Lorne, Colac, Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton.
  3. Horsham to Rochester via Donald, Swan Hill, Gunbower, Wedderburn, Dunolly, Bendigo and Nagambie.
  4. Rochester to Bairnsdale via Shepparton, Wangaratta, Tawonga Gap, Tallangatta, Hume Weir, Mitta Mitta, Omeo, Buchan and Orbost.
  5. Bairnsdale to the finish at Albert Park via Maffra, South Gippsland, Warragul, Drouin, Koo-Wee-Rup and Frankston.
