1960 Akademos

The very first Akademos was conducted by the Melbourne University Car Club on April 24th, 1960.

The first Akademos was known simply as the “Open Trial”. It is not clear exactly when it was named the “Akademos”.

The Director was Steve Coffey and the event was won by Tony Theiler, Martin Hartigan and Bill Hartigan in a VW. As the report below testifies, the first Akademos set a bit of a trend, namely wet weather in the lead u to the event making conditions somewhat challenging. Section 5 in particular, somewhere in the vicinity of McMahons Creek, presented some almost insurmountable challenges with a boggy hill followed by the track being blocked by a fallen tree requiring a lengthy detour. Only one case arrived within an hour of lateness!
