The final and deciding round of the 1966 VTC was won by Tony Roberts and Peter Haas in their HR Holden. giving them the state title. The only other contenders for the title, team-mates Reg Lunn and Geoff Thomas, retired after hitting a roadside post and holing their radiator.
Starting and finishing Geelong, the event ran mostly in daylight in the forestry areas around Ballarat with an overnight stop there. Continuous rain on the Saturday made conditions treacherous.
