The 1966 Caltex North Eastern Trial, organised by the North Eastern Car Club, was held on October 22.
VTC Round 6 – 1966 Caltex North Eastern Trial
It was a strong showing for Holdens which filled the top four places in this year’s North Eastern Trial. The win by Tony Roberts and Peter Haas moved them one step closer to the championship although second placed Reg Lunn and Geoff Thomas could still overtake them on the final round.
In equal second were Ron Phillips and Jim McAuliffe. The best placed Fords were the Cortinas of John Taws/Geoff Sproat and Andy Chapman/Rick Bainbridge in equal fifth. The factory Cortina of Firth and Hoinville suffered engine failure as did the fancied VW of Ray Christie with Martin Hartigan.
The event ran predominantly to the west and south of Wangaratta with the most intense competition in the Strathbogies.
