The Classic Trial, organised by the GHM Motoring Club, was held on April 8.
1967 VTC Round 2 – GMHMC Classic Trial
The Classic Trial, directed by Jim McAuliffe, was a “classic” drivers event run in the ranges to the north-east of Melbourne. It attracted a classy field including a number of intestate entries, perhaps checking out the event for the following year’s ARC.
Reg Lunn came out victorious with stand-in navigator Geoff Thomas, three minutes ahead of second place which was shared by the Vaughan brothers in a Cortina and Tony Theiler/Robin Sharpley in a “hot” VW. Evan Green with Roy Denny were in fourth.
Several fancied crews struck trouble, including Bruce Hodgson (with local Mike Flanagan) who rolled soon after the start and Frank Kilfoyle (with regular navigator Doug Rutherford) who had multiple punctures in the Saab V4.
