1972 Two Day Trial

The Two Day Trial was held on 16 Sep. Jeff Beaumont tells the story:

VRC  Round 6 – 1972 VADC Two Day Trial

Five heats and five different winners and this Two Day trial would add another different pair of names to the victors’ circle.

The 40 car field departed from the timber town of Noojee for a 114 mile division up Icy Creek Road, then onto Matlock, Aberfeldy, Binns and to division end at Heyfield.  At the half way break the clear leaders were Matt Philip/Roger Bonhomme in their XU-1, a lead they held to the finish.

The second division in the ranges near Moondarra continued with thick dust plus a couple of deep bogs, one of which claimed Bob Bird/Warwick Smith.

Peter Janson was guided by Frank Kilfoyle in this event but they had troubles missing a check point together with a few other mechanical issues.

Bob Watson was testing his new R12 Gordini prior to the Southern Cross but a collapsed shock caused his retirement at Stockman’s Reward.

The final Section was along the Big River to Enoch’s Point track with a tricky entry into the end control. Gil Davis put up the fastest time but entered from the wrong direction. dropping him down the leader board.

With six different winners of the six events run so far it was shaping up to be an exciting finish to this year’s Victorian Rally Championship with just one remaining round to run in the Otways.
