1973 Winter Trial

The Winter Trial was postponed from its winter date and ran on 17 November.

VCS Round 6 – 1973 HAC Winter Trial

Jeff Beaumont takes up the story….

Ross Turner and Ian Pearson in their Galant took victory in the Winter Trial and thus clinched the hard fought Victorian Clubman Series for 1973.

However the favorites for the title were Bond/ Richards who received a penalty for speeding in a Quiet Zone and hence lost the rally win and the title.

This Winter Trial, run by the Huntingdale Auto Club, had been postponed from earlier in the season due to heavy rain and was now run in dry and dusty conditions between Eildon and Heyfield.

Director Barrie Edmonds set a simple event with long sections, some over 40 miles in length.

The rally was most competitive indeed, with second to fourth placings being covered by just a single point.

This victory gave Ross Turner and Ian Pearson the 1973 Victorian Clubman Championship, after a hard fought season of competitive rallying. Runners up in the series were last year’s Champions David Bond and Ian Richards, just one point adrift
