1974 Brass Monkey Trial

The Brass Monkey Trial was held on June 1.

VCS Round 5 – 1974 RCCD Brass Monkey Trial

Jeff Beaumont tells the story….

This 175 mile event was run, as usual, in the Gippsland area and ran south of Morwell down to Foster for the half way break. The rally then headed back to finish at Picnic Point near Morwell in thick fog and freezing conditions. The event certainly stood up to its name !

The event was fully subscribed with 40 entries. The usual bunch of competitors were again fighting for honours but it was brothers Bruce and John Tassell who finally scored victory after a very consistent run. The farmer brothers certainly enjoyed running in their home territory of South Gippsland.

Mike Baxter / Tom Cox grabbed an early lead from the Tassells. Colin Turnbull / Jean Reid were going well in the Cortina.

On the run back from Boolarra, a couple of partial route charts in the Darlimurla / Delburn plantations caused a few problems. These were followed by a fully route charted stage to Haunted Hills.

Just 24 crews made it back to the bbq finish at Picnic Point.
