1975 Australian Rally Championship

This year saw the end of the Torana era and the emerging dominance of Datsun. It was also the arrival of a name little known on the east coast, Western Australian Ross Dunkerton and navigator John Large. They scored consistently in their 260Z, with three wins and two seconds to wrap up the series with one round spare. Which was fortunate, because they destroyed the car on the final round, the Alpine. Stewart McLeod and Adrian Mortimer were once again runners-up, now also in a Datsun 260Z.

Tom Snooks has provided the full story here.

Series Regulations

Events were run under the National Rally Code.

Vehicle eligibility was CAMS Group C – Australian Touring Cars, with additional requirements as per the NRC and state addenda. In several events winners or significant placegetters were not eligible for ARC points. These were generally FIA Group 2 cars imported for the Southern Cross, as well as heavily modified CAMS Group G cars.

Points were awarded down to sixth: 9-6-4-3-2-1, probably all results to count.

Events

The series continued with seven rounds, having added a WA round the previous year. The Bunbury Curran was dropped in favour of the Mazda House Rally run around Tarree. All events were now navigationally straightforward.

  1. Mazda House 1000 (NSW)
  2. Toms Tyres 1600 (WA)
  3.  Akademos (Vic)
  4. Bega Valley Rally (NSW)
  5. Warana Rally (Qld)
  6. Walker Trophy Rally (SA)
  7. Alpine Rally (Vic)
