The Brass Monkey Trial was held on July 26..
VCS Round 5 – 1975 RCCD Brass Monkey Trial
Gary Spence and Noel Kelly were the best team on the night, driving their Clark Chrysler Galant to a great victory in the Brass Monkey Trial, in mild and moonlit conditions. The Directors were Stuart Lister and Mike Mitchell on behalf of Renault Car Club of Dandenong . They promised a mixture of first class superb driver’s sections, together with no-nonsense navigation.
The rally attracted 31 entries and started at Heathcote. The first section was in the Axedale forest then on to a 20 km run to Pilchers Bridge where poor plotting caused many navigators to enter control from the wrong direction. Just a handful of crews cleaned the section.
After a service the event transported to the Moonlight Flat Plantation for a very testing, fully route charted section. Then onto the Welshman’s Reef area, where navigation and roadside tree stumps challenged the crews.
Then it was the drivers’ turn, with a 28 km blast through the forest to Leonards Hill.
At the division break at Bullarto, the first six placings were exactly how they appeared at the finish.
The following sections were generally smooth and fast, with a few jumps and crests.
The final competitive ran back through Daylesford Forest then back to Bullarto. In an effort for victory, Johnson / Curran put in a strong performance by winning the last two, dusty sections.
But it was not quite enough to catch the winners, who had put in a great performance all night.
