RCCV 1975 Goldfields Rally
The Goldfields Rally was the brainchild of Warwick Smith and he directed the event for the Renault Car Club. Victoria’s extensive goldfield’s area was to be the setting but unlike traditional navigational events, the Goldfields Rally was fully route charted. But that did not mean that the navigator got off lightly, because in the maze of tracks that are found in the goldfields the instructions come thick and fast, sometimes a dozen or more each kilometre. This required complete concentration by the navigator, somewhat akin to the modern day c-driver calling pacenotes. The pressure was apparent with experienced navigators Geoff Boyd and Ian Richards both retiring with car sickness.
The 1975 Goldfield Rally was held in the forests around Dunolly, with a central control in the forest at Painswick just to the north of Dunolly. Apart from car sickness, various crews encountered problems but it was the two Phils, Bernadou and Rainer, who came through to win the event by a single point from Bill Strownix and Ian Ellis.
