The Castrol Rally was by now major fixture on the Australian rally calendar, with thousands of spectators infiltrating the forests around Canberra. This year it had considerable direct live television coverage. The format was the same, Saturday daylight stages, longer night stages further to the west, and Sunday daylight stages again. Carr and Fury had a great battle on the Saturday, with torrential rain making for tricky conditions. Fury pulled out a slender lead but Carr took the lead on the night stages. Sunday saw a close battle between the two with Carr winning by just 45 seconds.
