1978 VCS Round 5 – LCCA Blue Ribbon Rally

Jeff Beaumont tells the story…

Ian and Trevor Boyd further extended their lead in this year’s Clubman Series with a decisive win in Stuart Lister’s Blue Ribbon Rally, the fifth round of the Clubman Series.

The central complex for the rally was Jim Maude’s excellent Tooborac general store which provided fuel and hot food right throughout the evening.

Crews headed out towards Heathcote but a number of fancied crews struck trouble in the very first competitive, including Chris Randall / Ray Scott who dropped some serious time. At the same time Lindsay Dale and John Wilkinson withdrew with a non-functioning clutch.

Returning to Toobarac from Heathcote the scores showed that Boyd / Boyd had established a considerable lead, which they would hold to the finish.

Warwick Freemantle and Adrian Spring were posting quick times, making up for a problem on an earlier stage which eventually cost them a podium placing.

Peter De Vaus and Nick Wright continued their fine run in the 404 against the popular Japanese rally models.

This was the Boyd’s third victory in the Series, giving them a healthy 17 point lead in the series.
