The Goldfields Rally, organised by the Renault Car Club, was held on June 17.
This was the fifth annual Goldfields Rally, traditionally run on very tight tracks in the goldfields around Dunolly. Although fully route charted, the intensity of instructions requires great concentration and teamwork by both driver and navigator.
This years Goldfields Rally was affected by wet weather resulting in the withdrawal of approval to use some roads in the Dunolly area. Additional distance was made up by some new sections in the Muckleford forest east of Maldon.
The event was won by Peter Davis and Paul Paterson in an Escort. George Fury and Monty Suffern were having a test run in the Datsun Stanza but lost time on a transport sorting a mechanical problem, finally finishing third.
