1978 Ready Plan Rally

The Ready Plan Rally was postponed from its original mid April date and was held on August 10-13.

CCRMIT Ready Plan Rally

The Ready Plan Rally was the second of two long distance rallies organised by the CCRMIT, the first being the 1977 Datsun Riverland Rally. Directed by Ian Richards, the open event ran over four days, starting and finishing in Echuca, with an overnight stop in Mildura. The event was convincingly won by Geoff Portman and Ross Runnalls.

The event attracted a small but quality field, including the “celebrity” entry of Peter Brock in the MHDT Gemini, navigated by Noel Richards, who finished second.

Extreme wet weather in the months prior to the event saw significant parts of the event cancelled or re-routed, particularly in the Murray River forests between Echuca and Swan Hill, which were completely flooded.

Route

The original route of the 1978 Ready Plan Rally was in six Divisions as follows:

  1. Start in Echuca, daylight touring to Terrick Terrick Forest then north to Gunbower Forest and into Kerang for a dinner break
  2. Westwards through the Mallee country around Manangatang, through the Hattah Lakes area, across the Sunset Country then up the border track before a breakfast break in Renmark.
  3. North from Renmark through scrub and station country then across the border into NSW and generally north east to a refuel at Coombah Roadhouse. Then east and south past Popio Lake and eventually into Mildura for the overnight rest break.
  4. North east from Mildura to a refuel at Pooncarie then generally south east across station country to Balranald and on to a meal break at Swan Hill.
  5. Some interesting diversions along the Loddon River enroute to Barham then extensive use of the Koondrook and Perricoota Forests. Then eastwards to Mathoura and a loop eastwards through the Millewa Forest and to Deniliquin for breakfast and a run around the local autocross track.
  6. A final set of daylight sections southwards through the Moira and Bama Forests to the lunch time finish in Echuca.

Wet weather resulted in the first and last divisions being totally cancelled. Division 2 was bolstered with an extra early section but the Hattah Lakes section was lost. Divisions 3 and 4 were in tact but much of Division 5 was lost and replaced by a new loop to the west of Swan Hill.
