The Yulunga Trial was held on April 1.
1978 VCS Round 2 – HDCC Yulunga Trial
It was another close finish in the Yulunga, round 2 of the Clubman Series, held out in Western Victoria and based at Hamilton. Director Max Sharrock had set an excellent event, with the navigation evenly spread between map reading and route charts.
Wet conditions prevailed all night, providing a real challenge for the 42 competing crews.
Early competitives saw Janiene Kilfoyle / Gary Gourlay miss a via point and then the retirement of Peter De Vaus / Nick Wright with mechanical problems in their 404.
Ian Miller / Gary Page started from the rear of the field and were putting up remarkable times in their Lancer. They led the rally until just before the end of the first division but disaster struck when their fast run was halted by an impact with a large gum tree, just out of Heywood.
Division two started with the leading group firmly equal on times, with Dale and Wilkinson in front by just a single point.
Conditions were still very slippery, with rain falling heavily in the forest stages.
First round winners Michael Ellis / John Mackay hit a gumtree dead centre and retired. Second place crew, Holder and Cutting retired with a broken exhaust.
The girls, Jean Jones and Joan Bennett were performing quickly but carefully and came home in an impressive fifth place in their Galant.
The Boyds were charging hard and won the second division by five points, gaining the lead and winning the event. And it gave them the lead in the Championship after the first two rounds.
