The George Derrick Memorial Trial, organised by CCRMIT, was held on 5-6 June.
1982 VTC Round 5 – CCRMIT George Derrick Memorial Trial
With a total distance to be covered of 550km in one night, Director, Noel Richards, promised an event “which still has some element of adventure and new terrain in it” plus a mixture of more straightforward and difficult navigation. The event started in Echuca and utilised the Murray River forests in both Victoria and NSW, with a division break in Barham. Navigation was sometimes a bit tricky with a “shortest mapped overall” section thrown in to see if the navigators were familiar with the rally code!
The winners were Bob Waterhouse and Paul Paterson, with Garry Harrowfield and Ian Ellis second on 5 points back and Barry Thompson and Keith Siler and excellent third a further 5 minutes back. Following them were David Officer/David McKenzie (who were comfortably leading until making a navigational error on the 2nd last competitive stage), Peter Hurrey/Warwick Smith and Graham Wallis/Nick Wright/Phil Nicholas.
