Victorian Rally Championship Round 1
It was no surprise that the event was won by George Fury and Ross Runnalls in their Galant VR4, by a margin of 2 minutes. Perhaps they were using the event as a shakedown for their ARC campaign but with no plans to context the entire VRC, it was second placed David Greig and Paul Tirant in the Datsun 280Z that signalled their championship intentions. A positive sign for the transition to PRC was that the top four places were PRC cars, with the Fyfe/Bashford Mazda 4WD tied for third with the Gambold/Randell BMW. Allan Johnson and Jim Maude brought the big Commodore home fifth just 2 seconds behind and only 2 seconds ahead of sixth placed Nigel Letty and Rob Davis in their Toyota. Johnson and Maude were first in the Clubman category, thus taking maximum championship points with Fury/Runnalls.
