This was the sixth Rally Australia and the fifth as a round of the WRC, but the first to be included in the ARC under new coefficient system.

Juha Kankkunen and Nicky Grist ran out clear winners in the factory Celica, more than 5 minutes clear of Ari Vatanen and Bruno Berglund in a Subaru Legacy.

The ARC round was won by Ross Dunkerton and Fred Gocentas in a Lancer, finishing a fantastic fourth outright.

The event was marred by the fatal crash of Possum Bourne and Rodger Freeth in which Freeth was killed.

Route

The event was run over four days commencing with the Langley Park super special on a wet Saturday morning. The super special was repeated on Saturday and Sunday evenings. There were 34 special stages totalling 550 km of competition.
