The Longest Night Rally, organised by the HRA, was held on 29 June. While we don’t necessarily include touring events in rallypedia, this one has been included because it used roads that, even in 1996, were no longer available for rallies but were used freely in earlier years. Starting at 6pm, the finish control didn’t open until 6am the next morning, indeed a “long night”.
Starting and finishing near Pakenham, crews covered a long loop, firstly heading south to Wonthaggi, then east to Buffalo, then north to Morwell before heading towards the finish. Total event distance was approximately 400km.
In equal first place were R Hartmann/S Dunbar and V de Koster/N Wright/G Fish.
