It was a topsy-turvy year for the Bates brothers in their Toyota Yaris AP4s. They took wins in every round except the final at Coffs Harbour where local Nathan Quinn stormed through to take the victory.
Harry too control in the first round in Canberra as Lewis had an oops in the tricky wet conditions. Harry was only outdone on the Power Stage by a one-off appearance by Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen. Harry and Lewis shared the honours in the west, then Harry took full points in Tasmania with stand-in co-driver, Coral Taylor. heading to Queensland where wet weather caused a last minute cancellation. So at the season mid-point, Harry held a 129 point advantage over Lewis who was actually in third behind the consistently scoring Richie Dalton.
Things swung back in Lewis’ favour with a dominant win at the Gippsland Rally after Harrys had a prop shaft failure, eventually placing 11th. South Australia was another disaster for Harry after a fire side-lined them early in the event, recovering to claim a few points. Lewis took the win to take a 25 point advantage into the final round. A big accident for Harry Bates towards the end of the Coffs Coast Rally put co-driver John McCarthy in hospital. While Quinn took the win, Lewis and Anthony’s second place secured them their first national title.
