2024 Bosch Australian Rally Championship

The 2024 Bosch ARC was expected to again see a close tussle between the Bates brothers. Harry was upgraded to the Rally2 spec Yaris from the opening round but Lewis had to wait until the Gippsland Rally. Strong challenges were expected from Scott Pedder in a Škoda Fabia R5, with Eddie and Steve Maguire also in Fabias, and Alex and Peter Rullo in Rally2 spec Hyundai i20s. The Production Cup was expected to be a showdown between Tasmanian Bodie Reading and Victorian Molly Taylor, both in Subarus.

The year started well for Harry and Coral with a win in Heat 2 in Canberra after Heat 1 was cancelled due to wet weather. An error in Heat 1 in the West cost them dearly, allowing Pedder to take a heat win, but they bounced back to take Heat 2. Like the previous year, Rally of Queensland was a potential turning point with both the Bates cars leaving the road on Heat 1, allowing Pedder to take the win. Harry returned to take Heat 2 from Pedder, but Lewis’ car was too damaged to continue.  So at the midway point, Harry and Coral held a small points lead over Scott Pedder and Glenn Macneall, with Eddie Maguire and Zak Brakey scoring consistently to be well in the running.

The Gippsland Rally was a disaster for Pedder as he almost took a rear wheel off on the Power Stage, limping home in 8th to salvage some points. Meanwhile the Bates brothers were dominant, Harry first and Lewis second. Adelaide saw Lewis Bates dominate again, having winning the event for a third time. Harry dropped from second to fourth on the first heat after a one minute penalty, opening the door for Pedder to take second. Harry took the Power Stage and second on Heat 2 after Pedder retired with a small error.

Harry and Coral carried a 75 point lead over Maguire/Brakey into the final round in Tasmania. They took a dominant win to claim the championship while Lewis’ second place was not enough to overtake Maguire who placed third on the round to finish second in the title race.

Toyota won the Manufacturers Championship.
