1990 BP Rally Tasmania

Rally Tasmania was held on March 30 – April 1.

Australian Rally Championship Round 1

Ten years after his last ARC victory, George Fury returned to the top of the podium in the first ARC round for 1990, this time in a Mitsubishi Galant with champion co-driver Ross Runnalls. The up and coming Neal Bates, campaigning the new 4WD Celica, placed second with co-driver David Jorgensen. It would be another two years before Bates would achieve his first ARC round win. Third was Ed Ordynski with new co-driver Mark Nelson, also yet to achieve their first ARC round win.

Route

The event was conducted over three days and 32 special stages totalling over 400 km of competition. Friday afternoon began with a short super special at the Silverdome Stadium south of Launceston, the stages to the north-east around Scottsdale, with two stages in darkness. Saturday started with the super special again, then daylight stages to the south of Devonport. After a service break in Burnie there were night stages to the south-west including the magnificent Hellyer Gorge stage. The overnight stop was in Burnie with Sunday stages to the south with the finish at Ridgley.
