1991 BP New South Wales Rally

The New South Wales Rally was held on July 5-7.

It was two wins on the trot for Rob Herridge and Steve Vanderbyl to give them a solid lead in this year’s ARC. Earlier series leaders, Murray Coote and Coral Taylor, fell from championship contention with no points, this time with gear selector issues with the Mazda. But Neal Bates and Mike Taylor finished second to keep their championship hopes alive. To win they would need to score 14 more points than Herridge and Vanderbyl on the final round in Queensland. That would require them to place first or second and for Herridge and Vanderbyl to score few if any points.

Route

The two day event was conducted in the forests inland from Coffs Harbour with 260 km of competition across 23 special stages.

Saturday began with a blast around the carpark of the Park Beach Shopping Plaza then crews headed to a series of stages around Bellingen, mostly short, but Newry was nearly 40 km.

Crews returned to Coffs for a mealbreak at Opal Cove then tackled six night stages starting with the short tarmac blast up Bruxner Park Road. Then followed stages in Bucca and Wedding Bells forests to the north-west, plus a stage west of Coramba. 

Sunday returned to Bucca and then repeated the night stages from Wedding Bells Forest before going down the tarmac of Bruxner Park Road to the finish at Opal Cove.
