1977 Castrol International Rally

The Castrol International Rally, organised by the Southern Districts Motor Sports Association, was conducted on March 19-20 in the forests around Canberra.

Carr win in an Escort

Greg Carr had moved to the newly formed Ford works team and dominated his home event in the Escort RS2000, winning from 1974 winner, Bob Watson, by a massive 13 minutes. For the first time the event had international participation in the form of New Zealander, Mike Marshall, who took some stage wins and placed second to Carr on the first division. Unfortunately he crashed out on the night division. George Fury was also fast on the first daylight division but was sidelined with mechanical issues. This left Carr’s nearest rivals Watson the Gerry Ball prepared 120Y, Wayne Bell in the Holden Gemini, and quick local Revs Rowney in a Datsun 1600.
