Andy Chapman competed from 1965 to 1973. The highlights of his career were finishing second navigator in the 1971 Australian Rally Championship with Bob Watson and winning the 1973 BP Rally navigating for Laurie Comerford.

“Andy was a lifelong friend who died in September 2019 at the age of 76 after several strokes. His widow Kaye asked me to look at a heap of documents concerning his motor sport career, which I have done and tried to put into order. They span the years 1965 (when he was a new engineering graduate) to 1973, when he won the BP Rally with Laurie Comerford. He then abruptly retired from motor sport.

The table summarises the material I have received from Kaye. For each event I have shown the date, who Andy competed with (he both drove and navigated), the car used, and the result including his placing, the outright winner and other MUCC participants as far as I could tell.”

In early 1968, Andy took over the management and preparation of a Hillman Hunter previously campaigned, somewhat unsuccessfully, be Neals Motors. Andy’s own report about the car, written in December 1968, is available here. The Hunter was then “repossessed” by Neals Motors, who saw it as a successful rally car that they owned. Andy was incensed, removed all the good bits he had paid for, and sent it back more or less as a body and a heap of unassembled, worn out and useless bits. It never saw daylight again.
