VRC Round 6 – 1980 VADC Amateur 100
It was a decisive victory for Chris and Simon Brown on the penultimate round of the 1980 VRC, giving them a slender 5 point margin over rivals Warwick Smith and Paul Paterson, who placed second in the Amateur 100.
Run in the Heathcote area, six of the events 22 stages were cancelled.
Favourites were Geoff Portman and Phil Rainer in the Autosport Datsun Stanza. Despite a number of stage wins, various problems saw them finish six minutes adrift in twelfth place and their championship hopes dashed.
A number of cars struck trees and stumps on the tight goldfields tracks, including Roger Moll’s Datsun 1600.
Competition was tight among non classified crews. In a sign of things to come, David Officer and Kate Hobson brought home their Galant in third outright.
