This year was the third year of the coefficient system for events and points. Perhaps to cover for the possibility of DNFs later in the year, several of the main contenders bagged a coefficient 5 event win early in the season, including Bates/Taylor who went to Tasmania for Round 1 and Ordynski who won at the Wagga Rally, Round 6.

Neal Bates and Coral Taylor dominated the year taking their third successive national title in their Toyota Celica GT-four. They had wins in all six coefficient 10 rounds, plus a win in Canberra and second at Rally Australia. Their nearest rivals, Ed Ordynski and Mark Stacey, took the big points win at Rally Australia as well as three seconds and a third. They easily took the Group N championship in their Lancer Evo2.

Series Regulations

Eligibility was Australian PRC and Group N, plus Group A (but seemingly only 2WD up to 2000cc). Rally Australia was limited to Group A and Group N.

Points were awarded down to outright tenth, 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 multiplied by the event coefficient. The best six results counted.

Classes were similar to the previous year with two 2WD and one 4WD class within PRC, three capacity classes for Group A, four 2WD capacity classes and one 4WD class within Group N. Points in classes used the 9-6-4-3-2-1 system multiplied by the event coefficient.

The Manufacturers award was based solely on Group N, with an award for the winning Group N driver.

Events

This year’s series was reduced to fourteen rounds, with the six main states fielding a “coefficient 10” round. but Rally SA did not run and was replaced by the City of Mt Gambier Rally. Rally Australia (coefficient 20) and Rally of Canberra (coefficient 15) continued. NSW had two coefficient 5 rounds while the other states, except SA, had one coefficient 5 round each.
