2007 NEC Computers Australian Rally Championship

The 2007 NEC Computer Australian Rally Championship was dominated by the Toyota Racing Developments team. Simon and Sue Evans took the now tried and tested Corolla Sportivo while Neal Bates and Coral Taylor were testing and developing the new S2000 Corolla. The Evans pair won every heat of the series, a feat only previously matched by Neal and Coral in the 1995 ARC, and not again until Harry Bates’ dominance in 2019. The S2000 Corolla was developing fast and finished every event, achieving eight podiums and placing Bates and Taylor second in the title chase.

The only other non-private team was the Pirtek Racing Team running two S2000 Ford Fiestas for Michael Guest (with Mark Stacey and David Green) and Darren Windus (with Jon Mortimer). They never seriously challenged the Toyotas, although Guest picked up a couple of podiums late in the season.

Many privateers put in great performances. not least Dean Herridge and Bill Hayes who had six podiums and placed third in the championship. Spencer Lowndes and Chris Randell scored consistently in a Lancer Evo9 to finish fourth overall.

Toyota won the Manufacturers title from Ford.

Dean Herridge and Bill Hayes again won the Privateers Cup. Paul Batten and Craig Jones won the Rally Challenge. Molly Taylor and Dale Moscatt in a Mitsubishi Mirage won the F16 Cup, John Berne and  Scott Beckwith again won the RS Cup while John Murray Senor again won the Australia Cup, this year with Andrew Longuet.

Series Regulations

Eligibility was Australian PRC, Group N and S2000.

For the first time, points were awarded down to outright twentieth, 40-34-30-26-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 on each heat. This points system lasted in various forms until 2019. There was a 50% bonus on the two heats of the final round. All points counted. A bonus points was also given on each event for the most stage wins (across both heats). It would appear that series registration was introduced as some placegetters in events do not appear in the final points tables.

PRC classes were the same as the previous year with four 2WD and two 4WD classes. The two 4WD PRC  classes were not based on capacity but on lists determined by ARCOM, essentially based on technology and cost, with P5B manufactured prior to 1991. There were no Group N classes. Points in classes used the same system as for outright for each heat with a 50% bonus on the final round, with all points to count. Class awards required points to be scored in at least two rounds.

There was also n F16 Cup, Privateers Cup, Rally Challenge, Australian Cup and RS Challenge.

The Manufacturers award was probably based solely on Group N and S2000.

Events

There were again six rounds this year including Rally of Canberra (actually a sub-event of the APRC round). Tasmania did not field a round but a NSW round returned in the form of the Great Lakes Rally, based out of Forster. Each round had two heats. Click on each round to see results and more details.
