Although the 1992 Australian Rally Championship lost BP as its major sponsor, the series was lively with four different winners across the six rounds. It also saw the arrival of New Zealander, Possum Bourne onto the Australian rally scene, a presence that would continue for more than a decade. He joined the Subaru team and took two round wins. But it was the Western Australian, Rob Herridge, who took the title again this year but in uncontroversial circumstances, taking two round wins with new co-driver (for him) Mark Nelson. Neal Bates with new co-driver Rod Horsley, took the round win in Queensland but otherwise had a frustrating season in the Celica GT-four. The NSW round in Coffs Harbour saw many of the top contenders strike trouble with locals Craig Stallard and Graeme Jesse taking the round win in a Galant VR4.
