1990 BP Australian Rally Championship

Having sponsored a number of the rounds of the 1989 ARC, BP became the major sponsor of the series for 1990 and 1991.

After a number of podiums during the previous two years, Ed Ordynski took the 1990 championship by a clear margin. They started the season with a third and a second to George Fury on the first two rounds, another second to local Rob Herridge in the WA round, and then three straight wins on the back half of the series. Mark Nelson won the ARC Navigators award despite not partnering with Ordynski on the SA round. Mitsubishi won the Manufacturers award.

Consistency paid off for George Kahler who had four podiums and placed second in the championship, but with three different navigators.

Series Regulations

Eligibility was Australian PRC, based on FIA Group A, plus Group N.

Points were awarded down to outright tenth, 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 with all results to count.

A separate award was apparently on offer for Group N, using 9-6-4-3-2-1 points. With the Ordynski/Nelson Group N Galant winning the championship, the Group N award became moot.

Events

There were six events this year, identical to the previous year except for the inclusion of the Coffs Harbour Rally as a NSW round. This was originally calendared as the GIO Investments Rally. The Esanda Finance International Rally of Canberra was calendared as the seventh and final round, but was dropped from the championship, perhaps because it was pace noted.
