It was a closely fought championship this year, despite some disappointing fields for several events. Neil Cuthbert and Daryl Adams won three events in their Subaru Legacy RS while other winners were Graeme Wise / Helen Wylie (Ford Sierra), Nigel Letty / Stephen Young (Subaru Liberty), Graham Alexander / David Stewart (Galant VR4) and in the joint ARC event, Neal Bates and Coral Taylor (Celica GT-4). But consistency paid off for Wise and Wylie, so that heading into the final round they were equal with Cuthbert /Adams having scored two seconds, a third, a fourth and a fifth. Whoever finished ahead on the final round would take the championship, and it was Graeme Wise and Helen Wylie who won the Rally of the Rising Sun by almost a minute ahead of Cuthbert and Adams.
The Novice Award was also closely fought with Tim Sullivan and Tony Borg looking strong with two wins and two seconds heading into the final round. A DNF allowed David Draper and Danny Murphy to overtake them with a fine win on the final round.
