This year was the second year of the coefficient system for events and points, but few of the main contenders competed in any of the coefficient 5 events. In fact the eventual champions did not score any points until Round 8.

Neal Bates and Coral Taylor took their second successive national title in their Toyota Celica GT-four with wins in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, plus a second in South Australia and the final round in Canberra. Engine failure at Rally Australia left the series open with Ross Dunkerton and Fred Gocentas challenging for the title in their Galant VR4, winning at Rally Australia as well as in South Australia and at the final round in Canberra.

Ed Ordynski and Mark Stacey were Group N Champions in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo2.

Series Regulations

Eligibility was Australian PRC and Group N, plus Group A (but seemingly only 2WD up to 2000cc). Rally Australia was limited to Group A and Group N.

Points were awarded down to outright tenth, 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 multiplied by the event coefficient. The best six results counted.

Classes were as per the previous year with two 2WD and one 4WD class within PRC, a separate class for Group A, Four 2WD capacity classes and one 4WD class within Group N. Points in classes used the 9-6-4-3-2-1 system multiplied by the event coefficient.

The Manufacturers award was based solely on Group N, with an award for the winning Group N driver.

Events

There were sixteen rounds this year, with the six main states fielding a “coefficient 10” round, the same as previously, and with Canberra being a “coefficient 15” round and Rally Australia “coefficient 20”. Victoria and NSW both had two “coefficient 5” rounds, with Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania having one “coefficient 5” round each.
