Re-live the action from 1950
As the new decade dawned, several car clubs were regularly running trials. The Light Car Club and the Victorian Sporting Car Club were the most active. This year saw the formation of the Victorian Amateur Drivers Club which was to become a leading club in rallying.
Perhaps the most significant development was the resurrection of the Alpine Trial at the end of the year. It had not been conducted since 1936.
We have details on several rallies in 1950. If you have any information, please let us know! Here are a few of the events for which we have some information.
The Victorian Amateur Drivers Club ran a 100 mile trial down the Mornington Peninsula. We don’t know the date, but equal winners were Graham Hoinville (probably in an MG) and Peter Damman (Citroen).
The Victorian Sporting Car Club ran their Summer Trial on February 16th. We have few details except an advertisement from Pound Motors that appeared in the Argus, stating that George Beecham cam second in a Renault 760.
The Light Car Club conducted its first post-war Woman Drivers Reliability Trial on April 23rd. It was sponsored by “The Age”. There were 38 entrants. Winner was Mrs. Pamela Holden in an MG TC.
The VSCC Midnight Trial was held on July 8th and was won by Cec Warren in an Austin A40.
The Western District Car Club’s Otway Trial was held on July 15th and 16th. We have no details other than this announcement in the Herald.
The annual LCCA Experts Trial was conducted on July 22nd. Only half of the 49 starters finished the event which was won by S. King in a Wolseley Hornet.
The LCCA Spring Trial was conducted 0n August 13th and was won by Peter Damman in a Citroen.
The VSCC Eastern Trial was held on August 20th and was won by Stan Jones in a Mercury.
An unusual event was the Light Car Club’s Mountain Trial, held on September 3rd. It was over a muddy 24 mile course at Yarra Junction. Was this an early rallysprint?
A significant event was the resurrection of the Alpine Trial by the Light Car Club. Conducted over the weekend of December 2nd and 3rd, this was the first post-war Alpine Trial and the first since 1936. It was won by Owen John and Ern Abbott in a Riley 2.5.
Several clubs were active running trials and rallies, particularly the Light Car Club, the Victorian Sporting Car Club and the Victorian Amateur Drivers Club, but we have no details of close/club events conducted.
