Highlights

The Victorian Rally Championship was won by Gil Davis (driver) in his Holden Torana XU1 3.3L. The navigators championship was a tie between Roger Bonhomme and Peter Haas. The inaugural Victorian Clubman Series was won by Bob Bird and Warwick Smith in a Cortina.

Australian Rally Championship

Victoria hosted two rounds of the Australian Rally Championship, the Akademos on 27 May and the Alpine on 26-30 November, both won by Frank Kilfoyle in a Torana XU-1, although his team mate Colin Bond won the national title.

 

Other Major Events

Two other major events in 1972 are worthy of note. The BP Rally ran in May and was won by Bob Watson and Geoff Thomas in a Peugeot 504. At the end of the year Victoria saw the second Dulux Rally.

Victorian Rally Championship

VRC events for 1972 were the Penfolds, Classic, Experts, Midyear, Derrick, Two Day and Cooper Memorial.

Outright champion driver: Gil Davis Holden Torana XU-1.

Outright champion navigators (equal): Peter Haas (with Gil Davis) and Roger Bonhomme (with Matt Philip).

Victorian Clubman Series

This was the first year of the VCS. Events were the Begonia, Blue Ribbon, Classic (also VRC), Derrick (also VRC), North Eastern and Cooper Memorial (also VRC).

Outright winners: Bob Bird / Warwick Smith, Ford Cortina Mk I
