Nissan Car Club of Australia

Formed in 1968 as the Datsun Car Club of Australia, the club changed its name in 1981 following Nissan’s rebranding of the marque. After CAMS affiliation in 1973, the club became active in organising rallies, initially novice club events. Over the decades club members have achieved great success and produced many champions including Hugh Bell, the Boyd brothers (Trevor and Ian) and Trevor Woods. The club organised the first Rally of the Rising Sun we think in 1976 and the first Nissan Nightmoves in 1978. The Nightmoves continues to run and is one of Victoria’s longest running events.

The club’s website is nissancarclub.org.au.

Club History

Rallies organised

The club organised a Novice trial in the mid 1970s. The Nissan Nightmoves, first run in 1976, became the club’s longest running event.  It has been a Combine 6, TAUCC and VCRS round for most of its history. From 1982 to 1986 the club also ran a separate Novice Nightmoves Trial (1985). They attempted to resurrect it in 2003 but it was cancelled.

The club’s other major event was the Rally of the Rising Sun, first conducted in 1974. It became the club’s first open event in 1980 as a round of the Victorian Clubman Championship and was for several years a round of the Victorian Trials Championship/Series and briefly a round of the Victorian Rally Championship. It seemingly fell victim to declining fields in the mid 1990s and has not been conducted since 1995.

Having run the Classic 1600 Sprint Rally in the mid 1990s (1994, 1996), director Craig Jarvie resurrected it as the Eildon 1600 Classic in 2011 and 2012. After a year’s break, Craig developed the event into the Eildon Stages in 2015 and 2016 as rounds of the Victorian Rally Championship. After another break in 2017, Craig took the event south to the Murrindindi area with a base in Yarra Glen, renaming the event the Valley Stages, which has run as a round of the VRC and VCRS since.

Other rallies conducted by the club include:

  • Neerim Classic 2014 and 2015
  • Datsun Debauch (1979)
  • Challenge of Clubs/Makes over many years (1978, 1996)
