Highlights

1993 was a successful year in Victorian rallying, with full VRC and VCRS calendars of events. A number of events were cancelled, including the Blue Ribbon (VRC) perhaps a result of the winding up of the Light Car Club. It seems that two VCRS rounds were cancelled but seven ran.

The Victorian Rally Championship was won by Graeme Wise and Helen Wylie in their Ford Sierra XR4 V6 4WD.

The Victorian Trial Series was conducted over five rounds and was won by Barry Farnell and Geoff Byron in a Subaru RX Turbo.

The Victorian Club Rally Series, conducted over seven rounds, was won by David Smart and Joe Brick in a Datsun 1600. Nissan Car Club took out the club award.

Australian Rally Championship

This was the era of “coefficients”. Victoria hosted three rounds of the Australian Rally Championship, all early in the year: the Begonia Rally (C5), the Healesville Stages (C10) and the Alpine (C5).

The Healesville Stages, directed by Glenn Cuthbert, was a new addition to the championship. Renamed Rally of Melbourne in 1994, Glenn’s many editions of the event set new standards in rallying for safety, driver enjoyment and organisational professionalism

Series

Victorian Rally Championship

VRC events for 1993 were the Begonia, Healesville Stages, Rally in the Valley, Akademos, Alpine, North Eastern and Rising Sun.

Outright Champions: Grame Wise / Helen Wylie, Ford Sierra XR4 V6 4WD

Novice Award: David Draper / Danny Murphy, Suzuki Swift GTi

Victorian Club Rally Series

The second tier state series for Grade 3 crews comprised 7 events. The MMAL Safari  was cancelled and the MSCC Disrally may have been cancelled (?).

Victorian Trials Series

This series comprised events that were predominantly tests of navigational skills rather than driver speed. It comprised 5 events: William Harvey Memorial Trial, Yulunga Trial, Gold Rush Trial, Experts Trial, Nightstalker Trial.

The series winners were Barry Farnell and Geoff Byron in a Subaru EX Turbo.

RNES – Riverina & North Eastern Series

This closed series was for members of the car clubs in north-eastern Victoria. The events in 1993 were the

Other Events

The George Woods Introductory Trial – 6 Feb 1993

The George Woods Introductory Trial, recognising the contribution and encouragement provided by George Woods, was organised by Glad Fish and her team to encourage new entrants to the sport.

The comments on the bottom of the Entry List are by Peter Shearman from car 10 and list the all-too-common problems that can be-set a rally car, albeit likely with minimal preparation. That was up to the driver!
