Highlights

A generally successful year in Victorian rallying with six rounds in the VRC and five in the VCRS despite some cancellations.

The Victorian Rally Championship was won by Craig Morris and Jennifer Cole in a Mitsubishi Galant VR4.

The Victorian Club Rally Series was won by Nick and Peter Whiteley in a 180B. CCRMIT won the club award.

1998 also saw the running of the last “Round Australia” trial, the Playstation Rally. The final two days ran in Victoria before finishing in Adelaide.

After a nine year gap, the Historic Rally Association held an “Olde” BP rally which was won by Terry Naish and Ross Runnalls.

Australian Rally Championship

Victoria’s round of the Australian Rally Championship was again the Rally of Melbourne. It was won by Neal Bates and Coral Taylor in the WRC Corolla.

Series

Victorian Rally Championship

VRC events in 1998 were the Rally in the Valley, Strzelecki Stages, Goulburner, Rally of Melbourne, North Eastern and Begonia.

Outright champions: Craig Morris / Jenny Cole, Mitsubishi Galant VR4

Novice award: Steve Poole / Matthew Birchall, Subaru Legacy RS-R

Victorian Club Rally Series

There were 5 VCRS events this year. The final round, the Cooper Memorial Trial, was cancelled and the Spring 200 postponed to the Cooper’s date, but it was then also cancelled.

  1. Bog-A-Duck Trial – Results also in Feb Unicar, revised results in May Unicar
  2. Mount Alexander Trial – Results also in May Unicar
  3. Rivertown Trial – Results also in Aug Unicar
  4. George Derrick Memorial Trial – Results also in Sep Unicar
  5. Nissan Nightmoves – Results also in Nov Unicar

Supposed final points in Dec Unicar. Unicar reports that CCRMIT was the winning club with 849 points, with NCCA second on 816. CerbCC were third and FFCC fourth.

The winning driver and navigator were Nick and Peter Whiteley (NCCA) who competed in a Datsun 180B SSS. The top grade 4 crew were Steve Poore (FFCC) and Matt Birchall (CCRMIT) who competed together is a Subaru Legacy RS-R. 

Robson Cup Rally Series

The Western Region Trial Series morphed into the Robson Cup. Events:

  1. Sundowner Trial – the results for the Tunbridge say it was Round 1, so presumably the Sundowner didn’t run
  2. Tunbridge Trial
  3. WDCC Trial
  4. Lock Exhaust & Autogas Trial
  5. William Harvey Memorial Trial
