George Derrick Memorial

Find out about the rich history of the George Derrick Memorial Trial / Rally

Event History

Organised by the CCRMIT, the George Derrick Memorial Trial/Rally honours the club’s first president. George Derrick was a welding instructor at RMIT who sadly died of leukaemia in 1956 at the young age of 42. The Derrrick, as the event became fondly known as,  was first run in 1959 and has been a heat of the Victorian Rally Championship or Victorian Trials Championship in most years. It also holds the unique honour of also having been a heat of the SA Rally Championship in 1976.

Up until 1979 the event had always had a strong navigational element but in 1980 it ran as a fully route charted special stage event. With the introduction of the Victorian Trials Series it reverted to its traditional style from 1981 to 84. From 1985 onwards the Derrick became the George Derrick Memorial Rally as a special stage event and a round of the VRC and/or VCRS. In 1988, with administrative demands escalating, CCRMIT joined forces with the LCCA and ran a combined Blue Ribbon/George Derrick Memorial Rally.  In the mid 1990s it adopted the name “Pyrenees Rush”. In 2021 it was a sub-event of the Gippsland Rally.
